28 W Fly from Bangkok to Guwahati. On arrival Guwahati check in to Hotel Dynasty.
Lunch: Afternoon visit Kamakhya temple, emporia selling local handicrafts, museum. Night market is in the street in front of our hotel. And a wonderful dessert shop around the corner.

29 Th Drive Guwahati to Shillong in Meghalaya, 3 hours. Check into Hotel Pinewood. Lunch. Afternoon walk to the nearby Ward's Lake for a stroll. Home to the Khasi people, a matrilineal tribe. Business district, craft shops, bookstore. Colorful dress of Khasi women. Shillong
30 F Whole day at Shillong. Activities include visit to Shillong Peak for a panoramic view of the hill station; Elephant Falls; Botanical Garden. Afternoon visit Bara Bazar to see village folk from the nearby villages sell vegetables, meat, exotic fruit. This is actually an excellent place to buy Naga crafts. Shillong
Dec. 1 S Van to Cherrapunjee, the wettest place in the world. Annual rainfall of over 500 inches is not uncommon and it has rained more than 300 inches in June. December average is 1 inch. Beautiful drive, spectacular landforms, interesting villages, waterfalls. Shillong
2 S Drive down to Guwahati. On the outskirts of Guwahati, stop at Kalakshetra, a museum-heritage center depicting art and culture of Assam. Continue on to check into Hotel Dynasty.
Lunch: Afternoon free. Can visit Brahmaputra River, nearby markets, silk shops.

3 M Early morning: Take the Guwahati-Dimapur Jana Shatabdi (first class) train. From Dimapur drive up to Kohima, 2 hours. Check into Hotel Japfu.
Lunch: Upon arrival. Afternoon visit the Hornbill festival venue, Kisema, a short distance from the city.

4 T Attend Hornbill Festival. Naga dances, ceremonies, crafts, food. Kohima
5 W Morning: Drive Kohima-Touphema, 1 and 1/2 hours. On the way visit the Nagaland State Museum. Proceed to Touphema. Check into Angami Naga style chalets.
Lunch: Afternoon walk around Touphema village. Overnight at Village Resort. A great place.

6 Th Morning: Visit Tseminyu, a Rengma tribal village a short distance away. Wonderful weaving, very nice village, interesting people, WW II stories.
Afternoon: Explore old and new Touphema.

7 F Morning: Drive back to Kohima. Rest of the day at the concluding day of the Hornbill festival. Craft sales at end of festival. Kohima
8 S Visit WW II memorial. The Battle of Kohima was one of the most important of the 20th century. Then to Khonoma, a stone village of historical significance. See mithun (Bos frontalis) in their mountain sanctuary. Kohima
9 S First: Last chance for Naga crafts in market.
Mid morning: Leave for Kaziranga, lunch at Dimapur. Check in at Wild Grass Resort.

10 M Morning: Elephant ride looking at wildlife; we will see hog deer, swamp deer, wild pigs, numerous rhino, wild buffalo, and perhaps elephants or tigers. The park is a veritable paradise for bird watchers, with a variety of large resident and migratory birds. There are several lakes and we are near the Brahmaputra River so there are numerous storks, kingfishers, darters, etc. At mid-day to a Mising tribal village with beautiful cotton weaving. Afternoon jeep safari to see rhinos, birds, deer, etc. Evening: Dinner around campfire, tribal dance performance Wild Grass
11 T Vans to Guwahati, Hotel Dynasty. The Dynasty has the best food in Guwahati. Bookstores, nite market in front of hotel. Guwahati
12 W AM: Guwahati Airport, Fly to Bangkok check in at Amari. Group dinner (option). Bangkok
13 Th Tour ends after breakfast. Depart

Northeast India : Hornbill Festival, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Kaziranga

The focus of the trip is the huge Hornbill Festival in Kohima, attended by all of the Naga tribes. Included also are parts of Meghalaya State, Tuophema, and Kaziranga National Park.

The cost of $2,995 includes all hotels in Thailand and India, breakfasts in Thailand and full board in India, all flights from Bangkok and back, all ground transport in India, all guides. Single supplement is $662. It does not include camera fees, visas, laundry, tips, private taxi, airport tax, and any fees for permits. A $500 deposit reserves a place; final payment by October 1.

Registration forms can be downloaded from the website or are available from Mekong Tours. Those signing up will be sent information on money, visas, clothing, medical, hotels, etc.

It is important to sign up early as I need to arrange our entry into Nagaland.
